As we approach 2023, many will make New Years resolutions. It’s a time of change, renewal, and for setting personal goals. What is it you would like to change?
I’ve always thought it was a good idea to think about what brought you the greatest joy and meaning in your life, and to do more of what you’d like to do, and less of what you think you should do. I taught this for many years in my wellness classes.
In my early training with Dr. Carl Simonton, I remember his very clear position and summary of his cancer program: A major factor in the development of cancer is trying to be who you are not. A major factor in the cure of cancer is opening to who you are. While most people know Dr. Simonton as the radiation oncologist who had his patients imagine their immune system like PAC MAN gobbling up cancer cells as part of their cancer treatment, a greater emphasis was making major changes in your life that will take you in the direction of greatest joy. It’s like the ages-old dictum: Follow your bliss.
What is it that makes your heart sing? What are your interests? Needs? Values? I’ve found that people’s spiritual beliefs, family and friends are most important, but that’s not how people spend most of their time.
My recommendation is that you make a New Year’s resolution list of what makes your life worth living. Take your time. Your list will likely be lengthy. Then pick one thing from your list every day and Just DO It.Keep your list handy. Post it on the refrigerator or somewhere handy where you’ll see it and remember that having fun is very good medicine. Being yourself is what will bring you the greatest peace of mind. Hopefully, you are constantly changing, learning, and growing AND creating a much better balance in your life between doing for others and taking care of yourself.
